Despite the devastating events of September 11th, people around the nation found the courage and spirit to forge ahead in the battle against cancer. Their stories speak of an unyielding commitment to help one another, throughout these uncertain times, as we seek an end to this life-threatening disease.
Relay for Life. A signature ACS event, this year’s Relay for Life walkathons held special significance in light of the September 11th Attacks. With many of the scheduled Relays occurring in the days and weeks immediately following September 11th, their success is a testament to the dedication of our many members and participants.
Big Apple with a Big Heart. One of the cosmetic industry's major fundraising events for the year, previously scheduled for September 12 in New York City was canceled; however, the supporters from this industry, nevertheless honored their pledges, giving the Society $2.6 million.
In an area where so much devastation and loss occurred, more than 107,000 walkers from New York and New Jersey defied fear and terrorism to participate in a series of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events held on October 14. Their courage and dedication raised $8.5 million for breast cancer research and programs.
Even teams from companies located directly in the World Trade Center showed up at the Manhattan "Making Strides" event. Despite losing close to 90 of their employees in the attack, the team from Oppenheimer Funds and Fiduciary Trust still chose to participate in the event. Fiduciary Trust participants said, "Breast cancer is still a battle we must fight, and we cannot let the terror stop us."
